A frequent issue has eyes that appear to be “sunset,” swollen, and surrounded by a dark halo. Women and men of any age can both claim to have experienced it at least once.

All it takes to have alleged dark circles or bags under the eyes the next morning is a little less sleep, a few hours in a smoke-filled space, a food addiction, or overindulging in alcoholic beverages.

But in many instances, genetic predispositions and other pathologies can also contribute to the developing of these two flaws. We assist you in comprehending the nature of these unsightly eye contour defects and the best mitigation techniques.

Dark circles under the eyes and bags are two distinct flaws that are frequently confused.

The eye contour, which is the most delicate area of the face, is affected by these two very prevalent skin conditions. Even though bags and dark circles are two conditions that affect the eye area, and because of this, they are frequently confused, it is important to clarify that they have different characteristics and are caused by different factors. Here, the skin is thinner and more delicate, making it much more susceptible to the appearance of bags and dark circles.

Dark circles: what they are and causes

Under the eyes, dark circles have a bluish-gray halo that is brought on by:

  • excessive capillary dilating under the eyelid;
  • an accumulation of melanin.

People with olive skin types are more likely to experience it because melanin concentrates around the eyes, darkening the skin. They can, however, also be seen in people with light skin. In this instance, the cause is frequently slowed capillary microcirculation.

The so-called “bags” appear as a swelling of the skin beneath and above the eyelid, which is brought on by:

  • an expansion of the normal orbital fat that envelops the eye;
  • a buildup of whey and water in the space between fat cells.

Poor lymphatic and blood circulation, which worsens over time and contributes to this condition, are the main causes of tissue elasticity loss.

Transient or permanent: the factors that cause them

Both bags and dark circles can temporarily affect the eye area or leave a permanent mark. For example, the following can result in momentary dark circles:

  • inadequate amounts of sleep;
  • too many cups of coffee
  • excesses in the diet;
  • stress both physically and mentally.

On the other hand, in people with a specific anatomical configuration of the under eyelid area, they are defined as permanent dark circles. In these cases, they start to show up at a young age and tend to accentuate even more if one leads an uncontrolled lifestyle.

Transient bags also manifest for the same reasons as dark circles:

  •  inadequate sleep;
  •  mental and physical exhaustion;
  •  improper feeding.

However, when the swelling persists, it can be brought on by thyroid issues, heart conditions, nephropathy, and eye inflammation, the expert continues.
