Double cleansing: what it is and how to do it with the right products
Double cleansing entails washing the face twice, once with an oily cleanser and once with a foaming one. Contrarily, when using a detergent that foams, the surfactant, which is what causes the washing action, is what cleans. The presence of a surfactant that can be soluble and convey the grease and dirt in the water ensures the removal of dirt.
The founders are Korea and Japan. According to legend, Japanese geishas removed their white makeup using cleansing oils and later foaming cleansers. The 10-step Korean skincare regimen helped the technique gain popularity.
On the other hand, when using an oily detergent, an affinity cleaning process is used in which the lipid (oil), which acts as a solvent against the fats in which the dirt is incorporated, is the substance responsible for the cleaning action.
Why use 2 cleansers?
Double cleansing is given by the use of two facial cleansers, specifically:
- Oil cleanser that removes oil-based impurities, including makeup, sunscreens, sebum, and pollution;
- Foaming detergent that eliminates dirt residues.
How and Who should do double cleansing?
for every type of skin. In general, it is very helpful for those who choose to wear a lot of makeup. Apply the oily cleanser to the palm of your dry hand, then use your fingers to gently massage it in circular motions for about 30 seconds, or until all makeup is removed, into the skin of your dry face.
Use an oil specifically designed for cleansing instead of just any oil because it will contain an emulsifying agent that will make it easier to remove oil and makeup residues by forming a milky micro-emulsion.
Next, moisten your face and massage your face in circular motions while using the foaming cleanser. Give your skin one last warm water rinse before patting it dry with a soft towel.
As part of your evening skincare routine, only double cleanse. After all, this is the time of day when your skin is most likely to have dirt and makeup on it.
Should Acne prone skin do it?
Another case you often ask me about is double cleansing and acne: is the Korean technique recommended for impure and acne-prone skin? Also in this case the answer is yes, but with due limitations: first of all, if you are afflicted with severe acne you should always consult your dermatologist specialist before choosing a specific routine or product.
Every situation is unique, so what might be successful for one person might be disastrous also, remember that the first step is the most important: despite the concern related to using oil on already oily skin, it is precisely the oily cleanser and makes the double cleansing perfect even in case of acne, because the oily base binds to the sebum, helping you to eliminate it more easily more easily
